What Does It Mean to Work for the Lord?

Thoughts on Colossians 3:23

I had a discussion with a friend about our jobs. She lamented the fact that sometimes the hiring for new positions at her workplace is based solely on seniority in the union. Qualifications and education did not seem to matter. She commented, “Sometimes I don’t know why I work so hard. It doesn’t make any difference.”

I commiserated with her and shared my own past work experiences where I felt no one would notice, or care, if I didn’t put in my full effort.

However, in recent years I’d been convicted of that attitude.

As Paul wrote to the believers in Colossae:

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters (Colossians 3:23, NIV).

This includes our day job.

A regular paycheque is great but it shouldn’t be the only motivator for doing our best. God wants us to work with a pure motive to please Him, not anyone else. God wants us to consider it an opportunity to serve Him even when we don’t like our job.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV).

Work at whatever you do as though you were working for the Lord.
